Edmonton Wedding Photographers | Some advice on how to find your perfect wedding photographer

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Oh yes, here we go again. Another article telling you what questions to ask when you interview prospective wedding photographers…. boooooooor-ring!

Nope, I’m not going to tell you what you should be asking, there’s already about 8000 articles out there to tell you do that (and some have some good advice, and others, not so much). I’m also not going to tell you check to see if they have insurance (although the former insurance analyst in me still thinks this is super importrant, but I digress) and I’m not going to tell you to ask to see business permits, because all that means is someone forked over some money to the City and voila!… they have a piece of paper. Nope, not going to tell you that at all. I want to help with the actual process.

Here is what I will tell you. Look at lots of websites, as many as you can! Doesn’t even have to be photographers from your area.  This is the fun part! You can do this at your own leisure, look at 10, 20, 50, 500 sites, however many you want and find inspiration too! While you are looking, make a list of what you like and don’t like and that’s going to help you narrow down what is you want from your wedding photos. Once you know what you like and don’t like, then look for wedding photographers that are in your area or who will travel to you for your wedding.

Try to narrow it down to 10 websites for photographers that you really like the look of their work. A photographer’s website really does show you the best of their work and what you can expect from them stylistically. Once you’ve found 10 photographers, contact them and find out if they fit your budget. If they are out of the budget by a lot, cross them off the list. If they are a little out of budget, don’t be so quick to say goodbye. If you love what they do, it might be possible to make a little more wiggle room in the budget.

Now, once you’ve got our list of photographers whose work you love, and now that you have an idea of pricing and whether or not you can realistically have your top picks photograph your wedding, make appointments with the 3-4 of your absolute favourites and meet with them.

Meeting 10 different photographers really isn’t helpful because it gets confusing and you’ll have a hard time remembering who said what and how you felt about them. It’s just too much. It also takes a lot of time to interview 10+ people. Wedding planning is hard enough, so give yourself a break and make it easier by meeting with fewer photographers! If your top picks don’t work out, then you can always go back to the list and start the process again.

By the time you get to the meeting, it’s all about personality and whether or not you mesh with the photographer(s). You’ve seen the websites, so you know you like their work. You’ve got an idea of pricing and whether or not you can afford them, so the meeting really should just be the time where you get to know your prospective photographers a little better as people to see if you have the right personality fit with you. I don’t think I can stress enough how important this is. Some people you just aren’t going to like, and that’s ok. Some people you are going to love and it will feel comfortable and I think that’s when you’ve found the winner. When you find the right one, you will know! Then it’s just a matter of the formalities of retainer, contract, etc. and you can cross something else of the list and feel a little relief knowing that you’ve tackled one of the most important parts of planning your wedding!

Mina & Aram’s Persian wedding at the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary, AB

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Last weekend I headed off to Calgary to second shoot a wedding for John Boccabella Photography. I don’t get to second shoot often and it was pretty exciting to just have time to shoot details! Mina & Aram were married in the Turner Valley Room of the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary. I got to join Mina as she was getting ready and I am still stunned by her beautiful Lazaro wedding gown. Also pretty impressed by how tall her shoes were and how well she seems to manage in them all day! Mina looked like an absolute princess when she headed down to the foyer to meet her husband-to-be as he handed her a gorgeous pink bridal bouquet. After the two had a few moments to share, we went to Eau Claire for a photo session with just the soon-to-be-wed couple and then were joined by family for more pictures.

I headed back to the Fairmont and had a blast catching all of the awesome details (look forward to the Details & Decor post for this one!) before the ceremony started. The ceremony was Muslim and Baha’i and there were lots of cool details, especially they spread of sweets surrounding the couple.

After the ceremony, the reception was hosted in the Crystal Ballroom and it was just gorgeous! Orchids were everywhere! Mina & Aram entered the reception and went straight into their first dance as a married couple. As the night went on a dancer performed for the guests and there was a very cool knife dance before Mina & Aram cut the cake. As we ducked out on the evening, the dance floor was packed and a huge party was in full swing! I’m so happy I was lucky enough to come along for the ride! Thanks to John Boccabella for having me along and congratulations to Mina & Aram!

Rockin’ the Dress with Molly Minx of the Hook ‘Em Revue in Edmonton, AB

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Yesterday found me shooting a super sassy burlesque dancer named Molly Minx. She was amazing in front of camera and just knew what to do! I think the dancing and performing burlesque really helped! We shot just down the road from the Matrix Hotel where a building was torn down and there was a great pile of bricks and a big hole in the ground. We then went West and took advantage of an awesome truck that was shot up and grafitti-ized (I know that’s not a real word) to awesomeness! It got super cold so we came back to the studio and shot a little in the alley before calling it quits. I’m still in love with the gorgeous flowers from The Wild Orchid! It’s fantastic when you can tell your florist your budget, the colours, and let them run wild with it… and it turns in to pure gorgeousness!

Anyway, here’s some shots from yesterday… I know it’s going to make you want to wear your wedding dress again for your own Rock the Dress shoot, and I will be more than happy to make you look just as awesome!

ENV everywhere! It’s a wedding blog takeover!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

This has been a great week! Met with my contractor today to get the work on the studio started. Well, showed them around they are gonna give me the estimate, but I know they will be he ones doing the work. The stairs at the space are under construction too, so I should be able to plan the open house to happen in a month or so!  Also finally got a paycheque from my new job that I can now spend on cool stuff for the studio!

The other awesome news is that 2 of my weddings/bridal shoots have made appearances on some pretty big wedding websites! The Rock the Dress session with Amanda debuted on OneWed.com, check it out here: http://www.onewed.com/blog/savvy-scoop/2010/03/26/retro-rock-dress-bridal-shoot-pretty-meets-gritty

Also super exciting, and we’ve been waiting a while for this one to show up, but Erin & Tyler’s gorgeous wedding is now featured on Wedding Bells in the Real Weddings section! Check out their story here: http://www.weddingbells.ca/articles/slideshow/cut-above/

That’s right, I am slowly taking over the wedding world! Yup, am sighing contentedly…
